Fixture Lab guide
How to Create Fair Football Fixtures
Fair fixtures give teams equal opportunity, predictable rest and a clear route to qualification. The schedule should be easy to audit before it goes live.
Equal opportunity
Teams in the same competition should normally play the same number of group games and receive comparable rest.
- Balance home and away labels
- Avoid repeated back-to-back games
- Rotate early and late starts where possible
- Track pitch allocation
Uneven groups
If groups have different sizes, compare teams using a published rule. Points per game or removing results against the bottom team can be fairer than raw totals.
- Publish the comparison method
- Use the same tie-break order throughout
- Approve standings before knockouts
Qualification
Create knockout placeholders before teams are known—for example Group A winner v best third-placed team—then populate names after approval.
- Avoid same-group rematches where possible
- State how best-placed teams are ranked
- Provide a bye rule for incomplete brackets
